Brig. Gen. Claire L. Chennault commanded the Fourteenth Air Force from 1942 to 1945; its mission was to hold the line against further incursion by the Japanese into China, Burma and India. The Chinese American Composite Wing (CACW) was formed in 1943 under the Fourteenth. While it was a small group, the CACW was recognized for its valor and cooperation: The airmen and crews came from China and the US, bound together to fight a common enemy. Their efforts—many of which are captured in this book—contributed to ending WWII and the defeat of the Japanese Imperial Forces. One of the 1st Bomb Squadron pilots in the CACW was Capt. Howard C. Halla. To honor of his friends and colleagues, he has collected a number of their memoirs and letters for publication in Skies Over China as he turns 100 in November of 2019. The cover photo shows two B-25 bombers, one with the bursting star of the Chinese National Air Force, the other displaying the US Army Air Force insignia. American-built planes were first flown to India and then distributed to bases in China. Some retained their AAF star and bars; many were camouflaged and were flown with the Chinese military symbol. A photo of both was highly unusual. More than being a rarity, the planes represent the extraordinary efforts of Chinese and American airmen who flew together in treacherous and unpredictable conditions. It was the time which Howard C. Halla would meet one of the greatest groups of flying and ground personnel in WWII; and it was the place where Captain Halla would live out the most memorable experiences of his life. It was November 15, 1944, Hanchung, China.
